Step up Development

Volunteer project in Arusha โ€“ We are a small, young aid organization that has its main location in Ngaramtoni – a village that lies at an altitude of approx. 1,600 meters at the foot of Mount Meru. Ngaramtoni is part of the Arusha area and is approximately 20 minutes from the city of Arusha.

For us, it is very important that you, native women and children and our supervisors learn from each other, benefit and support each other. You don’t know what task you could take on, what knowledge you could impart? Trust us, you surely bring enough knowledge with you! The most important quality you need is a loving, warm nature and patience!

We help our protรฉgรฉs deal with trauma, help them overcome fears, strengthen or build their self-confidence. We want to give them confidence and joy and motivate them to start their own projects so that they can stand on their own feet.

  • 6 hours of help per day

  • 5 days per week – 2 days off
Note about the volunteer work and other expectations

It must be said in advance: no two days are the same.
There are varieties of areas in which you can work, you can rotate through and get to know everything, or you can set your own priorities in your work that are of particular interest to you. For example, visit families to mediate. Take care of children who need tutoring or assignment assistance. Work with abused women or HIV patients. Especially people with albinism often experience a lot of harm and need special care.
These are just a few of the places we can really use your positive energy! We would just like to ask you to inform us in advance about planned activities because communication is everything!
Once a week there is a group meeting to discuss the week’s assignments, exchange ideas and give advice to each other. We also make a plan for the upcoming week.

Are accommodation and food included?

Yes, we offer food and accommodation

What type of accommodation can you provide?
  • Dormitory/shared rooms

Diet – nutrition information

From Monday till Friday the meals are included. On the weekends you have to take care of yourselves.
There is the possibility of self-sufficiency in the helper’s accommodation, as a cooking area is available. There are a number of small shops in the village where you can buy basic necessities. Friday is always market day, where, among other things, fruit, fresh vegetables and much more are offered. The water from the tap can only be drunk after it has been boiled. You have to pay for drinking water yourself. Water bottles are available everywhere.
In the city, with a short walk and a ride on the Daladala (public bus), reachable in about 25 minutes you will also find 2 large supermarkets as well as nice cafes and restaurants.

Fees transparency

Our goal is that one-day Step-Up Development will be able to finance itself through its own income (tourism, tailoring, handicrafts, volunteering, etc.) and not be dependent on sponsors. All of our European employees work on a voluntary basis for this project and have been funding this project from their private budget since 2017!

Social work in Tanzania is an intense way of volunteering and gaining a wide range of experiences. You learn a lot about the problems and challenges of growing up in a developing country under difficult conditions and also that there are no universal solutions to combat poverty.
Maintenance costs are incurred every day and at the end of the month, the salaries for our Tanzanian employees are also due. Often there is even not enough money for acute emergencies (food, costs for medical help, etc.). We ask for your understanding that we charge program fees. But we try very hard to keep the fees as low as possible, significantly lower than most other aid organizations! With your amounts for the accommodation, we are able to pay a small part of the costs for the maintenance of the Step Up Development – house, water, electricity, food, gas for cooking, etc.
