Thórsmörk Trail Volunteers
Updates December 2022
Iceland Forest Service Volunteer Trailteams in Iceland – We are looking for international volunteers to join our teams in the Icelandic mountains this summer 2023. No previous experience in trail construction work is necessary as practical training will be provided. We are looking for participants, aged 20+ who have some experience in camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. We have 3 and 6-week placements (as well as longer placements for team leaders). Our volunteers work approximately 40 hours each week, usually Monday-Friday. Our 6-week placements include a hiking week.
Participants organise and pay for their own travel to Iceland and to the meeting point in Thórsmörk. Participants also require travel insurance. Our volunteers bring their own tents. Food and camp facilities are provided. There is no participation fee.

Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well-prepared with warm clothing, good waterproofs and sturdy tents. Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and as many of our work sites are in remote locations, we do a lot of hiking to get to them!
Participants must be 20+ years of age. Participants organise and pay for their own travel to and from the meeting point in Thórsmörk and are also responsible for organising their own travel insurance.
We provide food and all facilities, but our volunteers bring their own tents.
Although we offer to host, participants do bring their own tents.
Our activities are about 40 hours each week but this does include all the hiking to the project sites which could be about 1.5 hours on an average day.
This season (2021-2022) we have 3 and 6-week places (and 8-week places for team leaders)
Our international volunteer teams include volunteers from all over the world and the working language on the programme is English. Once volunteers have joined the programme, food and campsites are provided throughout the placements (including weekends).
