Volunteering at AU PETIT BOISÉ micro farm community in Canada

Recently, this announcement was shared in our Facebook volunteer group. We’re eager to help this noteworthy community gain more visibility and attract the volunteers they need so much. Let’s take a closer look!

Located in the picturesque rolling hills of Dunham, AU PETIT BOISÉ stands as a flourishing micro-farm spread across 14 acres. Its vast spaces include a mixed forest, a vegetable and herb garden, a greenhouse, a swimming pond, and even a trampoline. With low-tech farming practices, AU PETIT BOISÉ delivers fresh vegetables to 45 local families, and an edible forest filled with fruits, berries, and nuts. Preparing sourdough bread, kombucha, and various preserves is a regular part of the farm life here.

The volunteer exchange at Au Petit Boisé

Every year, the organization welcomes interns and Volunteers who crave an immersive farming experience. Ideally, AU PETIT BOISÉ is in search of a couple willing to stay for the season, from mid-April to late October, as well as 2 to 3 interns from early May to mid-September. These long-term positions offer invaluable skills and responsibilities.

The interns learn all the necessary steps for the proper functioning of a commercial garden, from establishing and following a production calendar, caring for seeds, tending to greenhouse crops, preparing the land, identifying diseases and pests, to harvesting and preparing orders. After such an experience, the interns gain the knowledge and skills necessary to start their own garden.

Commitment

While the expected work commitment is 30 hours per week, the hours and days are flexible to everyone’s needs. The routine of a typical workday begins with breakfast at 8:00 am, followed by a brief meeting, and the workday ends at 4:00 pm with a cleanup session. After the workday, interns are expected to contribute to the cleanliness of common areas.

Accommodation

Accommodations at AU PETIT BOISÉ are simple but comfortable, with options including a cabin in the forest equipped with electricity, and two large SoulPad tents in the forest. This enriching experience is open to everyone, with no prior experience necessary.
