Photography may be the main role or one part of a wider position involving communication, filmmaking, social media or storytelling. Some opportunities welcome enthusiastic amateurs, while others require specific equipment or previous experience.
What counts as a photography opportunity? 📸
Photography should be a genuine part of the role, such as taking or editing photographs for documentation, research, events, communication or another defined purpose. A project should not be considered a photography opportunity simply because volunteers may occasionally take pictures during their stay.
Photography skills and equipment
Before applying, ask what the host actually needs you to photograph, whether previous experience or a portfolio is required and whether cameras, lenses, computers or editing software are provided. Some roles may require volunteers to bring their own equipment.
Also clarify how photographs will be used and who may publish them. When photographing identifiable people, particularly children or vulnerable individuals, appropriate consent, privacy and safeguarding procedures are important. Wildlife photography should also avoid disturbing animals or sensitive habitats.
