Some opportunities may also be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current duties, accommodation, meals and exchange conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.

What is glamping?

Glamping is a form of camping that offers more comfort or amenities than traditional camping. The word combines glamorous and camping.

Accommodation can range from relatively simple furnished tents to highly equipped structures with beds, electricity, private bathrooms, heating or other facilities normally associated with conventional tourist accommodation.

The exact meaning varies between businesses. There is no universal standard defining how comfortable or luxurious a property must be before it can call itself glamping.

Glamping is not automatically eco-friendly

Glamping is sometimes marketed together with nature, sustainability or eco-tourism, but these concepts should not be treated as synonyms.

A glamping site can make serious efforts to reduce its environmental impact through renewable energy, careful water use, waste reduction, local materials or responsible land management. Another glamping business may have a considerably larger environmental footprint.

The type of accommodation alone does not establish sustainability.

If environmental practices are important to you, ask what the host actually does rather than relying only on words such as eco, green, sustainable or nature-based.

Types of glamping accommodation

Glamping sites can use many different types of accommodation, including:

• furnished canvas or safari tents;
• bell tents;
• yurts;
• geodesic domes;
• cabins and pods;
• treehouses;
• converted caravans or vehicles;
• small wooden structures;
• other unusual forms of outdoor accommodation.

Some structures, such as yurts and tipis, have specific cultural and historical origins. Modern tourism businesses may use adapted versions, but the terms should be used accurately rather than treating every circular tent as interchangeable.

What can volunteering at a glamping site involve?

Depending on the project and season, participants may help with:

• preparing tents, cabins or other accommodation;
• cleaning and housekeeping;
• changing bedding and laundry;
• welcoming guests;
• reception and simple booking-related tasks;
• breakfast or kitchen support;
• gardening and landscaping;
• general maintenance;
• painting and repairs;
• building or preparing new accommodation structures;
• maintaining communal areas;
• photography and social media;
• other practical activities connected with the wider site.

The individual listing should explain which activities are actually expected. A volunteer should not discover after arrival that a broadly described cultural exchange is actually a full hospitality workload.

Building and setting up glamping sites

Some opportunities involve developing a new glamping site rather than operating an established tourism business.

Activities may include preparing land, landscaping, assembling tents, building platforms, painting, gardening or creating communal areas.

Simple practical work may be suitable for inexperienced volunteers when properly supervised. Structural building, electrical installations, plumbing, gas systems, roofing and other specialist work may require qualified or experienced people.

Ask what tools and protective equipment are provided and do not undertake technical work beyond your experience.

Glamping and hospitality work

Once a glamping site is open to paying guests, many volunteer tasks can resemble ordinary hospitality work.

Cleaning guest accommodation, managing reception, preparing breakfast, handling bookings and maintaining tourist facilities are all real operational activities.

A limited cultural exchange can still be appropriate, particularly at small family-run projects, but the host should explain the schedule, duties and benefits clearly.

The current Sails on Kos listing, for example, describes a family-run glamping operation with building, gardening, cleaning and hospitality activities and an agreed schedule of around 4 to 5 hours per day, five days per week.

Commercial glamping businesses and employment

Some glamping sites operate as conventional commercial accommodation businesses.

When volunteers perform fixed shifts or regularly carry out housekeeping, reception, food service, maintenance or other essential business operations, the arrangement may raise labour and immigration questions.

Providing accommodation instead of wages does not automatically make regular commercial work a volunteer activity.

Before travelling, check whether the proposed arrangement is permitted under your immigration status and whether local employment rules apply.

Seasonal glamping opportunities

Glamping projects can be strongly seasonal, especially in destinations where outdoor accommodation mainly operates during warmer months.

A host may need practical help before opening for the season, hospitality support while guests are present and maintenance or packing work when the season ends.

Check the dates carefully and ask whether the activities described in an older listing still correspond to the current phase of the project.

Accommodation for volunteers

Do not assume that volunteers stay in the same accommodation sold to paying guests.

A host may provide:

• a glamping tent;
• a separate volunteer tent;
• a shared cabin or room;
• a caravan;
• a dormitory;
• staff accommodation;
• another arrangement described in the listing.

Before applying, ask what sleeping space is actually provided to volunteers, whether bedding is included and what bathroom, shower, cooking and laundry facilities are available.

Food and exchange conditions

Glamping exchanges do not all follow the same model.

Some hosts provide food and accommodation, others provide accommodation only, and commercial businesses may offer wages, pocket money or another arrangement.

Before accepting an opportunity, confirm:

• what accommodation is included;
• whether food is provided;
• how many hours are expected each week;
• regular days off;
• whether additional paid hours exist;
• whether any mandatory fee or deposit applies;
• which facilities or activities volunteers can use.

If a listing is classified as Free on Voluntouring, it should also meet the specific criteria used for that archive: no mandatory participant fee, food and accommodation included and a normal workload of no more than 30 hours per week.

Guest facilities and volunteer benefits

Some glamping sites have swimming pools, yoga classes, watersports, bicycles, workshops or other facilities for guests.

Do not assume that volunteers have free access to everything advertised to paying customers.

Ask which facilities or activities are included in the exchange, which are available at a discount and which must be paid for separately.

Glamping and camping are not identical

Traditional campsites may offer pitches where travellers bring their own tents or campervans, while glamping usually provides accommodation that is already set up and furnished.

Some businesses operate both models and can therefore legitimately belong to both sections.

Yurts, tipis and treehouses

Some glamping sites use unusual structures that also have their own dedicated Voluntouring tags.

A listing may therefore belong to Glamping and one of these sections when the accommodation is genuinely present:

The structure itself does not automatically make the site glamping. A traditional yurt used as a family home, for example, is not necessarily tourist accommodation.

Glamping and retreats

Retreat centres sometimes use glamping tents, yurts, domes or cabins for guest accommodation, so the two categories can overlap.

They describe different things: Glamping refers primarily to the accommodation model, while Retreat refers to the residential programme or purpose of the stay.

A retreat centre should receive the Glamping tag only when glamping accommodation is genuinely part of its current operation.

Glamping and sustainability claims

If a host describes a glamping project as sustainable or eco-friendly, useful questions include:

• how electricity is produced;
• how water is sourced and managed;
• how wastewater is treated;
• how waste and recycling are handled;
• whether permanent platforms or structures affect the land;
• which materials are used;
• how heating and cooling are managed;
• how the site affects surrounding habitats;
• whether food or supplies are sourced locally where practical.

No accommodation becomes environmentally responsible simply because guests sleep in a tent, yurt or wooden cabin.

Remote and rural sites

Many glamping sites are located in rural areas because access to nature is part of their appeal.

Before applying, ask about:

• public transport;
• host pickup arrangements;
• distance to shops and services;
• mobile phone coverage and internet;
• access to medical care;
• weather conditions;
• whether volunteers need their own vehicle.

Remote surroundings can be attractive, but volunteers should understand how independently they can leave the site during days off or if the exchange ends early.
