Location

We are located in the thriving city of Trujillo, Peru in the city’s poorest district-La Esperanza.

Recognizing that many members of our community are born into this type of poverty and have very few job opportunities, we decided to broaden the horizons of our community by founding Vivential NGOย  Peru. For this reason, we are collaborating with volunteers to improve the quality of life of some of the poorest people through education.

Goals

Our goal is to provide opportunities to the members of our community using education in order to improve their lives. With the help of our volunteers, we are able to offer children and adults alike this useful skill for free.

1) Project: Working At A Dog Shelter

In Peru, sadly, thousands of pets are abandoned by their owners every year for various reasons.
Here are some reasons why:
  • The fact that most of them are cross or mixed breed, and therefore of no commercial value, is the main reason why they’re left alone on the street to either survive or die.
  • The luckier animals that aren’t hit by cars, shot, or used for research purposes, end up in a refuge or family shelter, where they wait to be adopted.
Two small associations in Trujillo were really concerned about the situation and got together to form a cooperative aimed at minimizing this awful situation by opening a small dog refuge centre.
They look after abandoned and sick dogs found on the streets, they also have a sterilization campaign in place to decrease the number of homeless pets.
The Refugee centre in Huanchaquito
The refugee centre is in Huanchaquito and can accommodate up to 40 dogs.
The centre is run by Danny, with help from just one other person so volunteers are always needed to help with the workload.
If you have any specials skills (veterinary skills) or experience (previous work in an Animal Refuge or similar), better still, but this is not necessary, all they need is someone with a genuine interest in and love for animals and a strong willingness to help.
Make a difference for these poor creatures marauding about the streets, ill and starving. They sure will appreciate it!

Volunteer Roles/Working Hours
The main task of volunteers is helping protect the good health and well being of the abandoned dogs while trying to find them a new home if possible.
ย Working at the Dog Shelter includes a combination of:
  • Helping with the maintenance of the facility: i.e. cooking, feeding, and cleaning up.
  • Taking the dogs out for walks.
  • Rescuing abandoned dogs at risk.
Generally speaking, the centre is open every day. However, volunteers work at the dog’s refuge centre from Monday to Friday, from 9:40 am to 13:30 pm. Working with Abandoned animals part-time can potentially be combined with another project role.

2) Project: Teaching English Program
Because public education in Peru significantly lacks funding, and the majority of the community cannot afford private schooling, the members of our community have very few opportunities for education. Thus, children are born into poverty and few are ever able to rise up and become empowered.
Recognizing that many members of La Esperanza are born into this type of poverty and have few job opportunities, our organization’s founders decided to broaden the horizons of our friends and neighbours by providing education.
There is no greater freedom than knowledge.
This belief defines the philosophy of our organization which offers English classes completely free of charge to people of all ages in the hopes of creating an equal opportunity for everyone to receive a quality education.
We believe that education is one of the best ways to help a person out of poverty, and by providing free English, computer, music, football, art and more classes, this allows the children and adults in La Esperanza an important skill which could lead to better job opportunities.
Volunteers share unique skills and knowledge to the students.
At Peru Vivential, we work in partnership with a local elementary school and also teach private lessons in the Peru Vivential Schoolhouse at
  • the public schools, class sizes are 30 students, ages from 5 to 13 years old.
  • Horizon School, classes are more like a tutoring session, with 1-4 students per class from children to adults.

We provide our volunteers with a rewarding experience learning about Peruvian culture while living with volunteers from around the world.

We transcend cultural barriers by promoting an appreciation of other cultures, respect for different norms, long-lasting friendships and appreciation for different ways of livingโ€“ all of which create an improved learning environment. A group of volunteers hoping to help make a difference here in La Esperanza! Come join our family and bring hope to the people of La Esperanza!
Volunteer Roles/ Working Hours

Your role will consist of leading the English classes, where possible this will be done together with another volunteer. At present, the general level of English of our learners across all schools and settings is basic, and it is important that volunteers are prepared to be teaching students or learners who will more than likely be at a beginner level. Generally, volunteers will work with classes once or twice a week between 2 or 4 hours per day its flexible, and the length of lessons is usually around an hour, but can sometimes be shortened or extended depending on other activities of schools and settings.

The class teacher will usually be there in the classroom with you but normally not participating. Depending on which class you teach the assistance you will receive from the teacher will vary.
