Join a team of “rebuild volunteers”
Red Shed is an organisation helping animal welfare shelters in border countries of Ukraine. We are now looking for a select few volunteers to help them at one of the Hungarian/Ukrainian border shelters. Starting in June, Red Shed is helping to put better infrastructure in place at one specific Animal Shelter.
This shelter was already poorly funded, under-resourced and overcrowded BEFORE the war.
It is now unable to cope with the number of Ukrainian animals it has been asked to take in and Red Shed is looking to help them.

This animal shelter is currently in very poor condition. It is run by amazing volunteers who are doing their very best with extremely limited resources. All of the animals are taken care of as best as they can, but they need our help.

Red Shed volunteers will work in the following areas:
- Cage/Kennel fix up (to include painting of kennels, fix up of floors of kennels)
- Temporary roof attachments (to protect the animals from the elements of hot sun/snow)
- Runs for shelter dogs
- Clean up of storage/building areas
- Other duties of care to the animals

- Dormitory/shared rooms 🛌
Diet – nutrition information 🥗🥤

Fees transparency 🆓🔍
While we don’t wish to charge for food and accommodation at the guesthouse, if we are to go out for meals, we will give you the option to join us (which we will ask for payment).
VISA – could you provide Visa support/info/invitation letters? 🛂
Yes, we can help with Visa/invitation letters ✅
Volunteers’ benefits 🏆🏅
We can offer a certification from Red Shed to let other animal welfare organisations know that you spent one full week on-site helping rebuild an animal shelter at the border of Ukraine and Hungary.
You will face some practical challenges on this trip:
- Weather – It will be hot! (Details of what to wear etc. will be provided to you)
- Shelter condition – The workload will be heavy, but as mentioned, incredibly rewarding!
- Language barriers – The regular shelter volunteers do not speak English; however, there will be a translator for the first couple of days and Google translate is our friend!
The volunteers are absolutely lovely and are very happy for us to help!
Falling in love with the animals – Yes, you will fall in love with all of them and some of them will steal your heart outright! Especially Cheeky Charlie – resident watchdog and annoyer of the other dogs 🙂
What to do in your free time 🚴🚣🦒
There is a pool and BBQ for the evening times.
Lovely walks and the option to explore the town of Kisvárda, Hungary.
Eastern Hungary – Kisvárda 20 km from the Ukrainian border near Zahony.
The town of Kisvárda, Hungary is located in the east of the country – 20km from Zahony on the Ukrainian border. Its population is approximately 17,000.
It is located in the most economically marginalised region of Hungary, but is extremely safe and the locals are friendly and welcoming to foreigners.
How to get to your site ✈ 🗺
International Travellers: To Budapest or Debrecen Airport. There are multiple daily trains to Kisvárda. If you are interested, we can provide you with further details.
Is there internet access? 🌐

Yes, we can accommodate eco/responsible tourists & paying guests 👌

I would like to send you a cheque to help Olena Vorontsova in her struggles to continue to care for the many abandoned/stray dogs.
I am not on Facebook/twitter/WhatsApp or any other media platform.
