Help teach English in Sikola Kampo, Tomia Island, Wakatobi (Indonesia)

Come and teach English on an island in Indonesia – You can call me Al for simpler. I am in a small town, namely Usuku, Tomia Island, Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. I am also the founder of KEMBALI (a local NGO) which concentrates on empowering and strengthening the capacity of local communities in villages to obtain decent livelihood rights through sustainable management of natural potential.

About Sikola Kampo

Sikola Kampo (Kampong School) is a non-formal educational activity that I founded with friends in 2015. Sikola Kampo was formed for local children and youth to become skilled and can benefit from tourism activities and the basic thing we provide is learning English. This is done because the problem faced by the local people in tourism activities is communication with foreign tourists. So I tried to find volunteer friends who could help us teach English at Sikola Kampo.

I founded Sikola Kampo in Kahianga Village, where this village has also become a tourist village on Tomia Island. The distance from my house to this village only takes 20 minutes by motorbike. At Sikola Kampo we also developed several special activities for local youth such as painting (murals), bamboo crafts, music, food and beverage processing, and others that we can do through the potential that exists in the village. So you can also share with us useful experiences that you hade and we can develop here.

What are you looking for help with?
  • Cleaning ๐Ÿงน
  • Teaching/Language Exchange ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿซ
  • Art Projects
  • Language practice
  • Help with Eco Projects
  • Teaching
What’s the mission of your community? ๐ŸŽฏ

Capacity building for local communities in the village, especially in communicating with foreign tourists.
What concerns me and my friends here is that Tomia Island should not only be known through its underwater panorama, because it is only beneficial for some parties, especially underwater tourism businesses who are able to have complete facilities, but also the land and coastal areas have the potential to explored by tourists. If everything goes synergistically, I believe the society will benefit equally through tourism activities on Tomia Island.

How many volunteers could you host? ๐ŸŽŽ
  • More than two
When would you need volunteers? ๐Ÿ“…

Every month of the year

How many hours of help per day? โฑ
  • 4-5 hours of help per day
How many days of help per week? ๐ŸŒ’
  • 4 days of help per week – 3 days off
Note about the volunteer work and other expectations ๐Ÿ“

The most important thing we need at Sikola Kampo is how local children and youth can develop in communication using English. And to teach English what I mean here is not to be formal like in formal schools. But through the basic introduction for children and practical communication or conversation for local youth.

*This English teaching and learning activity is carried out on:

  • Monday – 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Wednesday – 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Thursday – 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Saturday – 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Are accommodation and food included? ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿœ

Yes, we offer food and accommodation

What type of accommodation can you provide? ๐Ÿ•
  • Private Room ๐Ÿ”‘

As long as you are on Tomia Island, you will stay at my house in a private room. A very simple house in the city centre, close to shopping for basic needs, a traditional restaurant, and has very friendly neighbours. In this house, we will cook and eat together and you can also share your experiences with me about the cuisine of your country. I think it will be very fun because here you and I will be like a family, so I hope you don’t hesitate.

If you want to visit the traditional market then you can reach it by walking or by motorbike from my house. Besides that, you can also walk around to see unique house designs, and the surrounding environment, and explore directly with the community because we are very open to anyone. My house is also very close to the port where you may arrive or depart from the port.

Volunteers’ benefits ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ…

My big aim in inviting you here is of course not just to help the development of local children and youth in Sikola Kampo. But I also want to introduce the potential of nature, art and culture on Tomia Island. In addition, through this activity we can also establish friendships.

What will be done?

While you are here you will learn many things. I will invite you to learn bamboo craft, learn traditional dance (Saride Dance), learn to farm, traditional cooking and coffee, and learn local and Indonesian languages โ€‹โ€‹if you wish.

What to do in your free time ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿšฃ๐Ÿฆ’

Because activities at Sikola Kampo are carried out in the afternoon, you can take advantage of your time to relax in the morning. When there is no activity at Sikola Kampo (holidays) then I will invite you to visit some local communities managed by my friends, spend time on the beach, swimming, snorkelling, visit the village, enjoy local culinary and coffee, hike to some hills to relax and enjoy the sunset, and some other destinations.

Especially?

If you like outdoor activities, I will invite you to do camping on the small islands around Tomia Island. These islands are very exotic and remote, becoming a second home for me to find peace. Here I will invite you to fish with traditional techniques and teach you about traditional tropical cuisine. In addition, on this island you will also be satisfied with swimming, snorkelling because the area of โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹the waters of these small islands has a beautiful panorama to enjoy. You can sunbathe on the wide beach and read a book, feel the breeze, enjoy the freshness of coconut water, etc. I also often do this activity with tourists who have the same activity background if they wish.

Geography ๐ŸŒณAbout Tomia Island and Wakatobi

Tomia Island is one of four islands that form an administrative area to become Wakatobi Regency. While the word Wakatobi is taken from the first two letters of the names of the four islands, namely, Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, Binongko. So it becomes Wakatobi.

Wakatobi by the government has been designated as one of the leading marine tourism destinations in Indonesia through its tagline as an underwater paradise and the heart of the world’s coral triangle. This may be supported by the panorama and its underwater potential through the very varied number of coral and fish species. So that it attracts many tourists to come to do diving or snorkeling activities. Meanwhile, Tomia Island is the center of this destination in Wakatobi.

  1. Dear host

My name is Alicia Aregger, I am 19 years old and I come from the heart of Switzerland, Lucerne. I love travelling, getting to know new cultures and expanding my horizons. I have always wanted to volunteer and help others with my knowledge. I would be very interested in teaching English in your school at the beginning of next year (from 29. January 2023 to 19. February 2023). My English language level is B2, and this spring I will do C1. If you need any further information from me, I will be very happy to give it to you.

    Kind regards
    Alicia Aregger
